A Slippery Situation
The 25-year-old hiker was descending the middle pool area with a friend when he lost his footing on the icy stairs leading to the lower falls. Despite wearing microspikes, he slipped and landed hard on his shoulder, leaving him unable to continue the hike.
At 2:10 p.m., Greene County officials contacted Forest Ranger Dawson for assistance. By 3:30 p.m., Rangers Dawson and Gullen reached the injured hiker, provided on-site medical care, and carefully escorted him to Route 23A, where his friend was waiting. By 4:25 p.m., all resources were clear.
Winter Hiking Safety Reminder
Kaaterskill Falls is a breathtaking but treacherous destination in winter. Hikers should always:✅ Wear proper traction gear (microspikes or crampons)✅ Use trekking poles for stability✅ Stay on designated trails✅ Be prepared for icy conditions, even on mild days
Thanks to the swift response of Forest Rangers, this hiker made it home safely—a reminder that winter hiking requires extra caution! ❄️🏔️
