DEC Acting Commissioner Amanda Lefton Outlines Environmental Priorities

ALBANY, NY – Newly appointed Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Acting Commissioner Amanda Lefton has pledged to advance Governor Kathy Hochul’s ambitious environmental agenda, focusing on clean air, clean water, climate resilience, and natural resource protection.

“I am honored that Governor Hochul has entrusted me to carry out DEC’s critical mission,” Lefton stated. “My priority is delivering tangible results that protect our environment, natural resources, and the health of all New Yorkers for generations to come.”

Day-One Priorities for DEC

🔹 Strengthening Climate Resilience – With extreme weather events becoming more frequent and severe, DEC will work closely with state, local, and federal partners to reduce flood risks and implement projects funded by the Clean Water, Clean Air, and Green Jobs Environmental Bond Act.

🔹 Improving Air Quality & Reducing Emissions – This month, DEC will release draft regulations establishing greenhouse gas emission reporting protocols as part of New York’s cap-and-invest initiative. This plan aims to cut emissions, fund a sustainable economy, and ensure an affordable transition to cleaner energy.

🔹 Protecting Water, Land, and Natural Resources – DEC will continue investing in clean water infrastructure, sustainable land management, and community-driven conservation efforts to safeguard New York’s invaluable resources.

A Collaborative Effort for a Greener Future

Lefton expressed confidence that teamwork and innovation will drive success in achieving Governor Hochul’s bold climate agenda. “Through collaboration with local communities, businesses, and environmental organizations, we will make meaningful progress toward a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable New York.”

As New York continues to lead the way in environmental protection, the DEC remains committed to ensuring a greener, more resilient future for all. 🌎♻️
